Six years ago, when he noticed that the price of dragon fruit tended to decrease, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tan (60 years old, living in My Tinh An commune, Cho Gao, Tien Giang) made a bold decision, to destroy 6 orchards growing dragon fruit. long, switch to growing areca.
“Growing dragon fruit is labor intensive and labor intensive, hiring labor is increasingly difficult, but the price keeps getting lower and lower, so it’s not effective. In 2023, I decided to switch and go to the Ba Diem area (Hoc Mon, Ho Chi Minh City) to buy the cow’s areca seed back. plant.
Picturesque areca garden, billions of profits from the old farmer in the West
The land was already planted in beds, he kept growing the area. At that time, each kg was only 15,000 dong, less than a million dong seed was enough to cover the garden. It doesn’t cost much to work out, just buying and collecting seeds,” said Mr. Tan.
The garden surrounds the house, quite square. Mr. Tan planted areca trees in straight vertical rows, row densities 4m apart, and trees 1.5m apart. Each floor is planted with 2 rows of areca, 2 rows separated by a ditch.

Mr. Tan said that the planting area does not take care of, basically just clearing the grass in the garden. Cau is also not affected by pests and diseases. Mr. Tan only buys organic fertilizer to fertilize the areca a few times a year. In his garden, he grows legumes to increase the nitrogen content of the soil.
The 4-year-old areca tree begins to bear fruit and continuously goes to the chamber, not to give seasonal fruit. Up to now, Mr. Tan’s areca garden of 1,200 trees has been bearing fruit for 2 years, and the output is getting higher and higher.
Visiting the garden is not only a job but also a hobby of the old farmer (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
Most of Mr. Tan’s areca berries are bought by traders for export, a small part is used to make betel nut offerings, ceremony betel nut, and betel nut eating in the country. Mr. Tan said, how many areca leaves, traders buy all, even traders pre-order, win goods.
“On average, each tree a year gives about 50kg of fruit, the price ranges from 23 thousand VND (1$) to 45 thousand VND (2$) per kg depending on the time of year. The profit per tree is very large. This year I think there will be a profit of about one billion. copper” added Mr. Tan.

To prove that the calculated profit has a basis, Mr. Tan shared that a trader has offered to rent the garden for 600 million VND per year for self-care and self-exploitation. However, Mr. Tan said, one is afraid of people overexploiting, damaging trees, and damaging gardens; Second, if he didn’t take care of the garden, he didn’t know what to do, he couldn’t stand it, so he refused.
“I just keep the garden to take care of myself, pick myself, enjoy as much as I can, in the morning smell the fragrant areca flowers and be happy all day” – Mr. Tan smiled dryly.
He picks areca every 10 days, classifies young fruits and sells them to export traders, and beautiful old ones sell them for ceremony and supply to the domestic market.

In addition to selling areca leaves, Mr. Tan also nursed and sold areca seeds. This year Mr. Tan plans to nurse 30,000 seedlings, of which 20,000 have been booked by customers. With the selling price from 20 thousand VND to 25 thousand VND per young areca tree, the money from selling the seeds alone has helped Mr. Tan earn over 600 million VND.

The Old Farmer Collects Billions Of Money Every Year With The Off
Breeding sweet potatoes on red soil
The potato variety Le Can in Tan Binh commune (Dak Doa district, Gia Lai province) is famous for its delicious taste. One of the great contributors to bringing the aroma of Le Can potatoes away is old farmer Nguyen Trinh (56 years old).
Success from the development of Le Can potato variety has attracted many people to Mr. Trinh’s farm to visit and learn from experience to link and develop (Photo: LK).
Mr. Trinh recalls that in 1957, he and many people in Tra Doa village (Thang Binh district, Quang Nam province) went to Dak Doa to live and bring along sweet potatoes in the plains to plant on highland.
From two empty hands, Mr. Trinh saved money to expand the scale of the crop area. Particularly for sweet potato Le Can, seeing the economic value of this plant, Mr. Trinh rented 30 hectares of land for planting.
Mr. Nguyen Trinh, has worked hard to cultivate Le Can potato varieties on basalt land (Photo: Pham Hoang).
Mr. Trinh also tinkered with researching and manufacturing all kinds of machines for people to plant and take care of sweet potatoes such as potato plows and potato harvesters. Since then, production has increased significantly.
Mr. Nguyen Trinh shared: “Le Can sweet potato is like short-term crops, it only takes 3 months to harvest. This variety is characterized by yellow flesh, fleshy taste and characteristic aroma. If people plant in another land, only about 5km away, the smell and taste will be different.”
Collect billions every year
Le Can sweet potatoes are often harvested off-season compared to many regions of the country, so they always sell at a high price, 8,000-11,000/kg. Each hectare can earn 200-250 million VND/year, bringing in billions of VND per year for Mr. Trinh.($1=24,000 VND)
Mr. Trinh also built Tan Binh Agriculture and Service Cooperative with 8 members to link with relatives to develop Le Can sweet potato variety.
In 2023, he and the members of the cooperative planted nearly 50 hectares of potatoes with an output of 400 tons. With the price of 15,000 VND/kg, which is much higher than every year, members get a large amount of revenue.
“In previous years, I used to rent land to expand the scale of growing potatoes. However, in the past 2 years, rented land is scarce, so I can only grow 7 hectares on my land. I hope the government can plan land so that people can jointly build and expand the Le Can potato area”, Mr. Trinh wishes
In order to avoid the scene of “good harvest, devaluation”, old farmer Nguyen Trinh also researched and processed Le Can sweet potatoes into products such as sweet potato starch and potato vermicelli.
Buns of vermicelli are made by Mr. Trinh from Le Can potato starch (Photo: Pham Hoang).
Mr. Trinh shared, since the beginning of 2023, he has been tinkering online to make a machine to make potato starch. Then, he used this starch to make potato vermicelli, which sold at a high price, about 120,000 VND/kg.($1=24,000 VND)

“With an abundant source of potatoes, I boldly process starchy products and potato vermicelli. People try and appreciate it, so I invest in machinery for industrial production,” Mr. Trinh shared.
Thanks to the income from sweet potatoes, the old farmer owns more than 10 hectares of coffee trees, 7 hectares of sweet potatoes, 3 hectares of potato growing areas and some other areas for medicinal herbs. Thereby, Mr. Trinh created regular jobs for dozens of local workers , hiring 50 people/day during the season.
Mr. Truong Minh Thang – Chairman of Tan Binh Commune People’s Committee said that Le Can sweet potato is a typical local product. Currently, this potato variety has been well received by many customers across the country. Over the years, people have joined together to develop Le Can sweet potatoes. The commune also accompanies the cooperative, helping with knowledge training, finding more stable outputs to help people have a higher income.

Taking Care Of Eels Like A Baby, The Western Farmer Pocketed Hundreds Of Dollars Every Day
Mr. Nguyen Tan Loc (28 years old, living in Phuoc Tho hamlet, Quoi An commune, Vung Liem, Vinh Long) is currently the owner of a large local eel production and supply facility. Every month, Mr. Loc sells to the market from 150,000 to 180,000 eels of all sizes, the market covers the whole country.
Mr. Loc said, his family only had 3 fields but found that rice farming was not effective, so 2 years ago, he decided to switch to raising eels. Determined to get rich, Mr. Loc boldly borrowed over 800 million VND (3200$) to invest.
Raising eels is like taking care of a baby, farmers’ families pocket millions of dollars every day
“I hired workers to renovate the field, build 54 tarpaulin tanks with a full water supply and drainage systems, and artificial rain spray to create a suitable living environment for eels to breed. Strict handling and control.
Two years ago I released 1.2 tons of spawning eels, now the number is definitely much larger. Because letting eels lay eggs and then hatch naturally, the efficiency is not high, so I chose the artificial hatching model”, Mr. Loc said.
Three public fields were converted by Mr. and Mrs. Loc into 54 tanks for raising eels (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
The rectangular eel farming tanks are about 20m2 wide, all 4 sides around and the bottom are lined with canvas. In the tanks, Mr. Loc built the surrounding soil for the eels to make nests and a ditch in the middle for the eels to feed on.
Food for broodstock eels are natural creatures that eels like, such as earthworms, snails, etc. and industrial food. Mr. Loc said that the eels lay continuously from March to September, depending on the number of eels laid, they will periodically collect eggs every 10 to 15 days.
Mr. Loc is checking the situation of eels laying (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
“Eggs left in the nest will have a low hatching rate, hatch unevenly, in many litters, so the loss is very large. I take the eggs into a bucket and then incubate with an aerator for 7 days, the eggs will hatch at the same rate as above. 90%, much higher efficiency”, Mr. Loc said.
After hatching, Mr. Loc raised the eel in a pot containing a medium made of plastic fiber or trellis. Fry eels under 20 days old are fed pureed worms, older eels are fed powder or industrial pellets.
The whole family is feeding baby eels (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
Ms. Le Thi Diem My (Mr. Loc’s wife) shared that taking care of eels is as sophisticated as taking care of a baby, having to bathe and change the water twice a day. Every day, Mr. Loc and his wife also have to divide into many meals to feed the eels.
“Several times a day, husband and wife carry a bowl of food that looks like powder for children, fertilize each spoon with baby eels. Wait for the eels to eat full, if there is leftover food, they must be removed from the pot. After feeding, they must bathe and change. new water for the eels to live in. Only then will the eels be healthy and of good quality for sale,” said Ms. My.
Food for eel is applied spoon by spoon like taking care of a baby (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
Ms. My added that, according to market demand, the family is currently providing 3 types of seed eels. The youngest is a 20-day-old powdered eel that costs 800 VND each. Eels raised for 50 days will reach a weight of about 1000 units/kg, costing VND2,500 (0.1$) each. The larger type of eel will cost 3,500 VND each.
“Raising eel seed is not hard, but it’s not easy, you have to always have your hands and feet. In return, the income is also relatively. Except for costs and losses, with 3 fields of work a day, you can also earn more than a million dong in profit. “, My sister said.
50-day-old eels as big as chopsticks are prepared to be sold for 2,500 VND each (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
Mr. Loc shared, after 2 years of raising eels, he and his wife have basically recovered more than 800 million dongs of their initial investment, which is considered a profit from the parents’ eels as well as the invested barn system. However, Mr. Loc also said that raising eels is not easy and risky, so farmers who want to raise eels need to learn carefully before doing so.
In addition to fussy eating, baby eels also require cleanliness, having to bathe and change water twice a day (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
